the last plan...

posted on 09 Feb 2008 23:37 by chansak99

I think this time will be the last report about my study plan, improving speaking ability. First of all, I would like to apologize you all again coz I have no more time to focus on it. I have a lot of work to do and so tired that I can’t keep myself writing the result in each week. But now I can remember the promise I have told all you guys about the English seminar at Shagri-la Hotel in which I mentioned last publish.

The atmosphere on that day was too crowded coz I believe the people who attended the seminar need money, 40dollars with doing nothing; on the other hand, showed them the opinion in English. I am the one who needs it (very much).

There is nothing much because the organizer just needs to collect the data for the hirer company. I spent a few minutes to express my opinion about the pre-paid phone card. They started the interview by letting me introduce about my job and the frequency I used my mobile phone. Then they kept asking the question they had set.

What I really proud was that not only my English speaking was successful, but my listen was, too. I could answer them fluently in spite the committee is native. They spoke very slowly and fluently that I could catch all the words in sentence they asked. In addition, I think that I felt relaxed coz on that day the atmosphere was quite informal but casual. The committee sometimes laughed and shared something good for me. They respected my thought and treated me very well as if I was their first class customer.

This can show that the surrounding affects my English speaking. If I am not pressure, I can speak it fluently. But when I have to deliver the speech, I am nervous and dependent.

Aj. John used to give me some advice for delivering the speech that I should find something to do before appearing on the stage, where the eyesight of other people stare at me all the time, for example, shouting what is pressure on me, listen to my favorite songs, or even keeping quiet sitting alone in the quiet space. However, I have to find what I love to do. In addition, try to speak alone wherever or whenever I stay. I learned English speaking from everywhere I could watch, hear, touch and tactile. There are a lot of sources I can access to learn individually in order that I can imitate the speaking style. I am doing it and I can remember very what he have said.

In all, I can succeed what I have plan for improving my English speaking, but I promise I am going to go on my English speaking all the time coz the knowledge is endless. I hope my blog will be useful for you guys who read and who find the way to improve English speaking.

Instead of gaining knowledge.

In return, gain relationship,

Add informational knowledge.

Observing deeply, realizing truth as knowledge,

And recommend properly.’

The Real Situation

My Dear friends,

Long time no see!! It’s coz the wireless at my dorm did not work for a few days. So I can’t report what I have done with my speaking improvement.

For this blog, I would like to share the experience took place in one restaurant and it would show the hospitality of Thai people also. On January 21, I went to dinner with my roommate at one Japanese restaurant where there are a lot of both Thais and foreigners. I ordered nothing to eat coz I am going to go on a diet, so I just looked around in the shop and chatted with my roommate. After the meal and we asked the assistant the bill, there is the group of foreigner sat on the seat beside us. Their English was quite strange because of their accent; fast and difficult to listen. The called the assistant to order the food but the waitress could not speak English very well. Moreover, she didn’t understand and could not clarify what the food is. So I began to help them…

Bomb:              How can I help you?

Foreigner1:       Thanks. I don’t like a spicy food. Could you tell me this plate is spicy?

Bomb:              Seafood Stir Fried with Black Pepper. Not exactly. However,  this is the international restaurant, the cook might cook for the foreigner style. The cook understands well about the taste of Thai food for foreigners who do not like spicy one.

F1:                   Ahh!! I will try it. Would you mind tell the waitress to mark this plate for foreigner who hate spicy food?

Bomb:              (LOL) OK. You should order the glass of plain water also coz you might be burnt by that plate!! Kidding.

F1:                   it’s very kind of you to help me. I do love Thai people because they always give me a hand when I have a problem. However. I don’t understand why most of Thais can’t speak English well, they give me their smile instead.

Bomb:              Thai people want to speak it fluently but nothing rouses them to speak. I know there are a lot of foreigners who speak English visit Thailand whole year, but most of them have the individual guide. Moreover, they can access some help from the Tourist Information easily. So Thais people might think there is no need to study English. However, the government tries to support organizations to take part in this endeavor. May be next time when you visit my country again, we might found Thais can use English as a native. (LOL)

F1:                   However, I do love Thailand!!

This is one advantage of majoring in English. What I did is not only made the foreigners felt impressed in Thai hospitality, but it can promote the tourism in Thailand.  Do not shy when you find the farang in the trouble!!!

Meeting Ajarn John

As I told you yesterday about my presentation which I must use the speaking skill, I have decided to meet Aj.John Condon  at the CULI at once. I had ever studied with him last semester and I think that he might help me; giving some useful advice in order to improve this skill.

Aj. John advised me that I try not to stress out when I am standing facing with the number of people. I must have self-confidence. He told me that I must make absolutely sure that I face my audience and do not turn my back on them to read my own visual. The best way is that I must never read my own visual. He suggested that I should glance at it just to find an important point of reference, then I should get back to the audience. He added that this is the biggest mistake that many beginners as I make.

The way I should do and use when giving the presentation  are…

  1. I should tell the audience what they are going to see before I show it. This probably only needs one sentence.
  2. I should guide the audience through the main points.
  3.  I can develop the main points by going beyond pure description to explain why things happened or what they mean.

In addition, he also gave me the step of introduction of the presentation.

  1. greeting, name, position, organization
  2. reference to the audience
  3. brief background of what I am going to present
  4. statement of the topic
  5. division of the talk
  6. visual aids
  7. length of time of talk
  8. when the audience may ask questions
Ok, this is just the concept of the introduction of presentation. If you want to know more, you can ask me to bring you the document I asked from Aj. John or we can discuss each other about it to exchange the experiences about giving presentation

Giving a presentation

posted on 10 Jan 2008 17:20 by chansak99

This is a university sports' week and it is also our long holiday. i just stay in the dorm and evaluate myself about my speaking ability. Last week before after a few New Year Day, my friend and i gave a presentation to the class about the school survey. After i presented all the data i had collected with the Power Point Program, i have evaluated myself about giving the presentation and i finally found that it was too terrible.

What i thought it was terrible is about my speaking. you know, i had prepared a lot before the real day had come; noting in a pieces of paper, reciting the information regularly until it stuck in my mind and my head. However, i thought my presentation fail and it was not the way i had expected. Moreover, my friends(who are my audiences) told me that my i looked like a robot coz i read the script in my hand and read all the information on the computer screen. i knew that at that time i could not control myself and i was so nervous about  my speaking formally. i had to give my friends the statistic data and the numbers made me worried. i felt uncomfortable very much about my presentation. Would you mind giving me the comment on that day, and i hope all you guys might fecognized the atmosphere on that day very well. You can feel free to give my your suggestion in order that i have the better skill in presentation.

Thanks,

Bomby.
